Recognizing the People Who Show Up: An Unsung Hero Reflection

A conversation about helping a father find resources brought back memories of 2022 and the support Kathryn Ratey provided.

Father On The Move Spotlight | October 23, 2026

During the 2026 Vital Village Summit, I saw an opportunity in the agenda to nominate someone for an Unsung Hero Award. A conversation with a staff member from The Home for Little Wanderers, who described helping a father going through divorce locate resources, brought someone to mind.

It reminded me of 2022, when I was searching throughout Massachusetts and beyond for resources to remain connected with my son. Kathryn Ratey, then with the Boston Suffolk County Family Resource Center, listened, followed up with service providers, and documented our communications and outreach. Her written timeline helped record the steps I was taking to find appropriate parenting-time services.

I believe recognizing people who show up for fathers and families is just as important as identifying the barriers that need to change. This reflection is about why Kathryn came to mind as someone deserving recognition. It is not an announcement that she has received an award.
